I came to Bub’s with a serious craving for some classic Nelson Bay-style fish and chips.
Originally, I had a couple of other spots in mind, but they were both closed—so Bub’s became the choice of the day.
On a horrible, windy, rainy day—the perfect weather for a hot, hearty meal—it felt like a ghost town around the area.
Service was quick, and the food arrived just as fast.
I ordered the barramundi, which came out with a beautifully crispy batter (and of course, the mandatory sprinkle of chicken salt). The fish was cooked perfectly—tasty, flaky, and fresh. The chips, however, were a bit of a miss—not terrible, but not as good as the fish deserved.
Parking was easy, with spots available right out the front.
I can imagine this place would be buzzing on a sunny day, with harder-to-find parking and longer wait times—a good sign of a popular local spot.
I’d definitely come back—next time, hopefully with better weather and maybe a bigger appetite

Pretty good fish and chips. Nothing mind blowing but well cooked and generous servings. A had battered whiting and hubby had grilled swordfish. Both happy and full

Food was a big hit! Had fresh prawns and oysters, and fish and chips. The lady who served us was lovely and was able to talk us through the extensive menu options. Loved seeing the pelican that strolled through the shop like it owned the place. Bonus that it has a toilet and sink so you can wash stinky seafood hands!

There are mixed reviews to this place, but from personal experience recently we enjoyed it. Food was good and service was friendly. We ordered a platter for $60 and it was more than enough for 2 ppl. BBQ octopus, fresh prawns and oysters, fish cocktails, calamari and chips.

The food was fresh AF, the staff were friendly and cracking jokes, chips were crispy, the fish was wonderfully flaky and tasty as, and the old style potato scallops were the best I’ve ever had. We were definitely impressed by these good old fashioned fish and chips.
Also they’re right next to a fish monger so you know it’s all quality as!
